Two New Female Characters Coming to EA Sports UFC

Get ready to strap on your fighting gloves. As we know, EA Sports UFC will be dropping on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 early next year. Adding on to that, EA Sports announced that two well-known female fighters, Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate, will be joining the roster of available fighters in the game. The timing of this new development, a first in the UFC series, is quite apropos as it comes hot on the heels of the inclusion of the women’s bantamweight division to the real-life arena. Ronda Rousey was the first woman to sign with the company back in 2012.

It seems that more and more game series which typically feature a predominantly male casting are opening their doors for strong female counterparts. Call of Duty: Ghosts, the newest title of a decade-old franchise, is including female soldiers that will be available to players. This is a step above other war scenario-type franchises such as Medal of Honor which last had a powerful female character in its 2000 prequel Underground, or Battlefield which had a nearly-anonymous, non-speaking female character named Jennifer Hawkins in Battlefield 3. Whether it’s a nod to the recent real-life development of including women in combat situations, or simply a response to pleas from the fanbase, both or something else entirely, the presence of active-role female characters is a subtle yet powerful growing trend spanning across various genres.

EA Sports UFC drops on both next-gen consoles Spring of 2014. Are you excited to see these two female characters joining the ranks?
