SEGA Announces Sonic Boom

While it was no surprise that a new tv series based on Sonic the Hedgehog was in the works, Sega’s announcement of a new game based on the series was unexpected for most. The title will also be called Sonic Boom and serve as a prequel and tie-in to the tv show which will air on Cartoon Network.

The debut tv trailer can be seen below, the series is expected to be 52 epsiodes, each 11 minutes long.

It is also the second game in Nintendo and Sega’s exclusive 3 title partnership, meaning it’s Wii U and 3DS only (the first being Sonic Lost World).

A new trailer, seen below shows off Sonic and his friends with some new designs and seemingly new styles of play.

First impressions have already compared the game to Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter and that may be due to the fact that the team developing the Wii U version of the game is Big Red Button, a studio founded by Bob Rafei who was a director at Naughty Dog for 13 years. The 3DS version is being developed by Sanzaru Games who most recently took over the latest Sly Cooper, Thieves in Time from Sucker Punch although no 3DS footage has been shown just yet. Sonic Boom will also be running on CryEngine3.

The game is said to be more open than previous installments with room for more exploration and the design of Sonic and his friends isn’t the only thing that’s a little different. Gameplay styles have slightly changed from the last time Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were playable.

Tails uses gadgets to do his bidding, Knuckles uses his muscles and retains his ability to climb marked surfaces and Amy returns with her hammer in tow.

While Sonic has taken many different directions in the past few years this new turn seems to be a good move for Sega. Although the game does not have a release date as of yet, it is expected to be released in the Fall and rumored to only be a US/EU release. What does this mean for future titles? Probably nothing too drastic, but this game seems to be shaping up to work well in Sega’s favor.
