REUS Review: Become one with Nature!

In Reus, you control powerful giants that help you shape the planet to your will. You can create mountains, oceans, forests and more. You can sprinkle your planet with plants, minerals and animal life. There is only one thing on the planet that you do not control and that is mankind along with all their virtues and and all their vices. You can shape the world they live in, but not them as they have freewill. Give them what they need and they may thrive, but Give them too much, and their greed may gain the upper hand.

I knew this game had something unique to offer when i read the description about it. Many games before have had the player playing someone who controls everything, but very few have let you control nature, and only nature. This game is unique in many aspects, but still shares a very similar idea to the much older game, Populous, created by Peter Molyneux for Bullfrog in 1989.

At the beginning the game eases you in with a short tutorial which explains what the four giants do and how to use them. They start with going through each giant and make you use the giant to proceed. It then sets you goals like cover half the surface of the world with terrain from your giants and also things to create.

The game is built around the idea that you, the player, observe the world. You decide to praise or punish your people, and how you do it is up to you as well. You decide what to enrich the land with and what to make a rarity. The game stays fresh for a very long time as there is a very large amount of different outcomes depending on your play-style.

The people will go about their lives by themselves, if for example they build a granary, you must help them in any way you can. By helping them, they can gain more wealth and evolve faster through time. The people will progress through until they have villages and much more. To add to the replayability of the game you can unlock new content by helping humanity achieve numerous developments.

Judging on how you form an area of land it will have unique creatures living upon it. This means different areas will be richer in different things and therefore used for different things. The game lets you decide a certain amount but to really progress properly you must work with humanity and keep them going at a steady pace.

I really enjoyed playing this game and i loved the art style and the soundtrack was very solid. I genuinely played for hours and I will definitely play for many more hours to come. The game keeps things interesting with the added abilities of the giants and the unpredictability of mankind.

A truly great game and a joy to play.
