Call of Duty: Ghosts on track to be Most preordered Game of 2013
You would be forgiven for thinking that Grand Theft Auto V would be the most preordered game of 2013, but according to GameStop, it is instead Call of Duty: Ghosts which is currently on track to being the most preordered game of the year.
SVP of Merchandising for GameStop, Bob Puzon, stated that “Call of Duty is an entertainment juggernaut and cultural phenomenon. We are excited for the upcoming release of the new installment of this blockbuster franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts, We look forward to celebrating the worldwide November launch of this great game that is on track to be the most preordered title of the year,”
This has come to a shock to many people, especially as Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, had earlier stated that pre-orders for Ghosts are “are well below the record-setting pace” which was set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in 2012. Hirshberg also gave a possible explanation as to why that is the case.
“Our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past preorderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition,”
However despite what GameStop has said, it is unclear how exactly they are judging the “Most preordered game of 2013″. If the data collected is for preorders in 2013, then that could explain why GTA V isn’t up there, as the majority of preorders could have been made in 2012, as a result of GTA V being announced in 2011 with a longer time frame to be preordered from the point of announcement to release than that of Call of Duty: Ghosts.
If that is not the case and the data is for games coming out in 2013, no matter when they were preordered, then that would certainly come as a huge shock. However I expect it is for orders just in 2013, considering Grand Theft Auto V is set to break all kind of opening week sales, so it would be inconceivable that Rockstar’s behemoth could lose out to COD: Ghosts for preorders.
